Most people who fly to Tanzania for the mountain end up doing a safari too, and they are right to. You are already here, the parks start an hour from where your climb ends, and the two experiences could not be less alike.
Should the safari come before or after the climb?
After. This is the one piece of advice we give without hesitation. You will come off the mountain tired in a way that is genuinely hard to describe, and a safari vehicle is an excellent place to be tired in. Somebody else drives, you sit, and remarkable things happen outside the window.
Doing it the other way round means starting the hardest thing you have ever done with a week of early alarms already behind you. It also means that if the climb runs long, your safari is the thing that gets cut.
How many days do you need for both?
Add them up honestly. A climb is five to nine days on the mountain. A safari that is worth doing is four days minimum, and better at six or seven. Then add arrival and departure days, and at least one full rest day in between.
That rest day is not padding. It is a shower, a long sleep, a proper meal and clean clothes, and it is the difference between enjoying your safari and sleeping through it.
Which safari suits a post-climb body?
A shorter northern circuit works well: Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara are close together, so you are not spending your recovery in the car. If you have more days, the Serengeti is worth the drive or the short flight. What we would avoid straight after a summit is a route with long transfer days back to back.
And then the coast?
Plenty of people finish on Zanzibar, and if you have the days it is the natural end to the trip. Climb, then the parks, then the sea. We arrange the whole shape as one trip.
