For most first-time climbers, the honest answer is Lemosho with eight days. But we guide Kilimanjaro trekking tours on six of the climbing routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, and every one of them exists because it is right for somebody. This is the comparison we talk each climber through before anything gets booked.
How do the Mt Kilimanjaro climbing routes compare?
They differ mainly in days on the mountain, steepness, crowds and scenery, and days matter most, because time is what your body needs to adjust to the altitude.
| Route | Days | Difficulty | Scenery | Summit chances | Cost band |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Machame | 6 or 7 | Steep in places | Varied from the first day; the busiest trail | Good on 7 days | Mid |
| Lemosho | 7, 8 or 9 | Moderate, long | Quiet forest start, the best of the west | Our strongest choice over 8 days | Higher |
| Shira | 6 | Moderate, starts high | Crosses the open Shira Plateau | Best if you arrive acclimatised | Mid |
| Marangu | 5 or 6 | Gentlest gradients | Same path up and down; huts, not tents | Weakest on 5 days; take 6 | Lower |
| Rongai | 6 or 7 | Moderate | Dry northern side, the quietest approach | Good on 7 days | Mid |
| Umbwe | 6 | The steepest and hardest | Dramatic and rarely walked | For experienced climbers only | Mid |
Cost bands are relative, not prices. More days in the park means more park fees, so the longer routes cost more. We quote every climb individually.
Which Kilimanjaro trail suits which climber?
Match the trail to your time, your experience and how you honestly feel about sleeping in a tent.
- First climb, and you can spare the days: Lemosho over eight. The quiet forest start is a bonus; the acclimatisation is the point.
- Short on days: Machame over seven. Steeper and busier, but it works.
- You want a bed, not a tent: Marangu is the only route with huts. Take the six-day version, not the five.
- Climbing in the rainier months: Rongai comes up the drier northern side and is the quietest of the gentler trails.
- Already acclimatised from another mountain: Shira starts high on the western plateau and rewards a body that is ready for it.
- Experienced and sure-footed: Umbwe is the steepest way up. We only recommend it once we know you.
Torn between the two most popular? Our Machame or Lemosho guide takes that one decision apart in depth.
What about the Northern Circuit?
We do not offer the Northern Circuit, so read this as information rather than a pitch. It is the longest way round, circling the quiet northern slopes with generous time to acclimatise. If that is what drew you to it, Lemosho and Shira are the nearest equivalents we run: both start in the quiet west, and both can be walked slowly. If only the Northern Circuit will do, book it with a company that guides it well. We would rather lose the sale than sell you a substitute you did not ask for.
How long should your Kilimanjaro expedition be?
As long as you can give it. Across all six routes, 95 to 98 percent of our climbers reach the summit, our own figure, and those who fall short are nearly always on the shortest itineraries. We will not quote a success rate per route, because honest per-route numbers do not exist, but the pattern is simple: the routes with more days do better. Whichever you choose, your climb is led by our own KINAPA-licensed guides, certified in wilderness first response, first aid and CPR.
If you send us your dates, your walking experience and your feelings about tents, we will tell you which route we would put our own family on, and why. A WhatsApp message is all it takes to start that conversation.
