The best time to climb Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro can be climbed in any month. That is not the same as saying every month is a good idea.

The two dry windows

January to mid-March. Warmer, quieter, and often the most pleasant walking of the year. The mountain is greener than people expect. Afternoon cloud is common but heavy rain is not.

June to October. The long dry season and the busiest stretch. Clear mornings, cold nights, and the most reliable summit weather. August and September are the peak of the peak: book early or accept that the camps will be full.

The two wet ones

Late March to May is the long rains. The forest section becomes genuinely muddy, the tents rarely dry out, and the summit gets fresh snow. Some people love the emptiness. Most do not.

November brings the short rains. Usually showers rather than days of rain, and often a good month for anyone who wants a quiet mountain and does not mind wet afternoons.

Things people over-think

The full moon. It makes summit night beautiful and you can walk without a head torch for stretches. It also makes those dates busier. It is a nice-to-have, not a reason to move a trip.

The cold. Summit night is cold in every month, well below freezing with wind on top of that. The season changes the walking, not the summit.

The honest advice

If you can travel in any month, come in the dry windows and add a day rather than saving one. If your dates are fixed and land in the rains, it is still worth doing, but pick a route with better hut or camp options and go in expecting mud.

Tell us your dates and we will tell you straight whether they are a good idea, including when the answer is to come back another time.
