First-time visitors often frame this as a choice. In practice almost every good northern itinerary includes both, because they do different things and they are on the same road.
What the Serengeti is
Endless. That is the honest word. Grass plains to the horizon, broken by kopjes where lions warm themselves in the morning. Because it is vast, sightings feel earned: your guide reads tracks, listens to the radio, watches the vultures. When you find a leopard here, it is your leopard.
It rewards time. Two nights is a visit; three or four is a safari.
What Ngorongoro is
A collapsed volcano, with walls 600 metres high and a floor about 260 square kilometres in size, holding one of the densest concentrations of large animals anywhere. Lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena everywhere, flamingos on the soda lake, and one of the last places in Tanzania to see black rhino in the wild.
It works differently: you descend in the morning, spend the day on the crater floor, and come out again. It is intense, concentrated, and busier than the Serengeti, because everyone shares one bowl.
How they combine
The classic shape runs Tarangire or Lake Manyara first, then the crater, then the Serengeti, or the same in reverse. The crater works well as a single spectacular day; the Serengeti carries the rest of the trip.
If you genuinely must choose
With only two or three days total, the crater plus Tarangire gives you the most animals per hour. With four or more, the Serengeti becomes the heart of the trip and the crater the exclamation mark on the way in or out. Tell us your days and we will lay both options next to each other.
