Most first safaris go north, and rightly so. But Tanzania has a second circuit, and knowing the difference is how a second trip, or an unusual first one, gets planned.
The northern circuit
Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara. The most famous concentration of wildlife on the continent, the migration, the crater. Everything is drivable from Arusha in a loop, the infrastructure is deep, and the game viewing is as close to guaranteed as nature gets.
The trade-off is that everyone knows it. In peak season, a lion sighting in the crater can draw a semicircle of vehicles.
The southern circuit
Ruaha and Nyerere, far larger and far emptier. You can drive for hours and see no other vehicle. The wildlife is different in flavour: enormous elephant populations, wild dog, big lion prides, and boat safaris on the rivers, which the north cannot offer at all.
The trade-offs are real: getting there usually means a flight, sightings take more work, and the lodges are fewer. It is a connoisseur’s circuit, and people who love it really love it.
How to choose
- First safari, or travelling with children: north, without hesitation.
- Second visit, or allergic to crowds: south, and give it enough days to breathe.
- The migration specifically: north. That is where it is.
- Boat safaris and walking: south.
Or both
With ten days or more the two combine well: the northern icons first, then a flight south into the silence. It is the fullest picture of Tanzania one trip can give, and it is exactly the kind of route worth planning together rather than off a shelf.
