The best company to climb Kilimanjaro is not the one with the nicest website. It is the one that answers everything below in writing.
Is this Kilimanjaro tour operator local, or a reseller?
Many of the companies you find from abroad are resellers: they sell you the climb, then subcontract it to a Tanzanian operator you never chose. Their margin sits on top of the real cost, and that is most of the reason the price gap between local operators and foreign agencies exists. Booking directly with a locally owned company usually means the same mountain and the same crew, with the money staying closer to the people doing the work. We are locally owned in Arusha, so yes, we are biased. But the test is simple and works on anyone. Ask where the office is and who employs the guides. The answer settles it in one email.
What safety questions separate serious Kilimanjaro trekking companies?
Four, and each deserves a written answer before you pay.
- Guide training. Ask for Wilderness First Responder, first aid and CPR certification, plus a KINAPA licence. Our guides hold all of these.
- Guide ratio. Ask how many guides will join your group on your dates. Enough guides means one can descend with a struggling climber without ending the climb for everyone else.
- Oxygen and monitoring. Ask whether emergency oxygen comes on every departure or costs extra, and whether guides check your blood oxygen with a pulse oximeter through the trek. On our climbs, both are standard.
- Summit success. Ask how the number is counted, because there is no official audit. Ours is 95 to 98 percent, and we say plainly that it is our own figure.
How does the company treat its porters?
Ask about wages, load limits, meals and mountain clothing, and watch how specific the answers are. Vague answers usually mean the porters are paying for your cheap price. This one is personal for us.
