Masai Mara vs Serengeti: what is the real difference?
The honest answer is scale and rhythm, not quality. The Masai Mara is compact. Sightings come quickly, drives between them are short, and it sits within easy reach of Nairobi, which is why shorter Kenya safari packages work so well. The trade-off is company: at the famous crossing points in peak season you will rarely be alone. The Serengeti is far larger. You drive further for your wildlife, but the herds spend most of the year on the Tanzanian side, and outside the busiest weeks you can sit with a sighting in something close to silence. It also joins Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara on one road circuit, so a Tanzanian itinerary varies more without a single flight.
Kenya and Tanzania safari seasons: when is the Great Migration on each side?
As a rule of thumb, the herds are in Kenya’s Masai Mara from around July to October, and in Tanzania’s Serengeti for the rest of the year. Early in the year they gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti for the calving season, then push north and west, with river crossings on both sides of the border. The exact weeks shift with the rains, so treat any timetable, including this one, as a guide rather than a promise.
