There is no single best month for a safari in Tanzania, but there are honest answers depending on what you want out of it.
June to October: the classic dry season
The bush thins out, water becomes scarce, and animals concentrate around the rivers and waterholes that remain. This is the easiest game viewing of the year: less cover, predictable water, and dry roads. It is also the busiest period and prices reflect it.
January to March: calving in the south
The wildebeest gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, and for a few weeks the plains are full of calves finding their feet. Where there are thousands of newborns there are predators, and this is some of the most dramatic big-cat viewing of the year.
April and May: the long rains
Afternoon storms, green landscapes, muddy black-cotton roads, and lodges at their emptiest and cheapest. Photographers love the light and the skies. If you do not mind working around rain, it is the best-value season by a distance.
November and December: the short rains
Brief showers rather than washed-out days. The migration moves back south, the landscape greens up, and the parks are quieter than in the peak months. A good compromise season.
What about the river crossings?
The famous Mara River crossings happen in the northern Serengeti, roughly in the July to September window, but they are an event, not a schedule. Herds gather, hesitate for hours or days, then cross in minutes. Seeing one is a matter of putting yourself in the right area with enough days and some patience, and no honest operator guarantees it.
The short answer
For a first safari with the least compromise: June to October. For big-cat drama and greener scenery: February. For value and empty parks: April, May or November. Tell us which of those sounds like you, and we will build the route around it.
